We are advanced beginners when it comes to yoga. We started before the pandemic and still practice two to five times a week, so when we are in Playa del Carmen, we always look for a studio that feels welcoming but serious.
Tulum may be the epicenter of the yoga scene in Quintana Roo, but Playa del Carmen has plenty of committed teachers and practitioners too. On our last visit, we found a terrific studio just a simple 15-minute walk from Casa Karma: Yogaloft Playa del Carmen.
Where to Find Yogaloft
Yogaloft is located in Plaza Pelicanos on Calle 10, between Avenidas 10 and 15. From Casa Karma, the route is easy and mostly straightforward.
Walk out of the entrance to Playacar Phase 1 and turn right on Avenida 10. Continue straight and cross Avenida Benito Juarez. When you reach Calle 10, look to your left and you will see Yogaloft mid-block.
We timed the walk at a normal pace and it took about 15 minutes. It is just enough movement to arrive warm, loose, and ready for class.
Check the Yogaloft schedule before you go and plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before class starts. Sessions can fill up, especially with popular teachers.
What the Classes Feel Like
Right away, you can tell that the people who teach and practice at Yogaloft are serious about yoga. The studio offers many different styles, and the classes are often full.
Many of the students were clearly in excellent yoga shape, but we felt comfortable in our less-than-perfect bodies. The room had focus without judgment, which is exactly the kind of balance we hope for when trying a new studio away from home.
- Good for committed beginners - The classes are real practice, but the atmosphere still feels welcoming.
- Good variety - Yogaloft offers multiple styles, so check the schedule for the class that fits your mood and level.
- Easy from Casa Karma - No taxi needed, no complicated route, just a pleasant stroll into town.
The Vinyasa Class We Loved
Ellen led a morning Vinyasa class, and her instruction was excellent. By the end of the 90-minute session, we were completely drained, but in the good way: healthy, focused, and very ready for the slow walk back.
On the way home, we stopped for fresh juice, which tasted extra delicious after class. It is one of those little Playa del Carmen mornings that reminds you why staying close to town matters.
"We were completely drained by the end of the 90-minute session, but in that good way." - Casa Karma field notes
Or Practice on the Casa Karma Deck
Of course, you can always skip the studio and practice yoga on the Casa Karma deck. The ocean is right there, the breeze does half the work, and the view is pretty tough to beat.
Still, if you want a real studio class during your stay, Yogaloft is an easy recommendation: close, serious, welcoming, and walkable from Casa Karma.
